To claim "I" means to separate one's self out. This is the little self claiming a "space". It may come from a place of empowerment, which is necessary after a stage of "victimhood".

It is part of the entire awakening/ascension duality process that is necessary in order to graduate to a place of oneness as WE.
When one can recognize their own inner strength, they no longer need to step up to "claim" it, as this is a lower vibrational frequency of the ego.
